Back pain is one of the most common ailments; it is often not serious but can be very uncomfortable and painful for the person affected. In most cases it is due to the way in which the bones, ligaments, and muscles, work together.
The back is a very complex structure. It consists of twenty four small bones known as vertebrae that help to support the body’s weight. In-between the vertebrae are spongy like discs that allow the spine to bend and flex. There are also ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves, which combine to allow the movement that most of us take for granted.
Back pain affects the majority of people from all backgrounds and races at some point in their lives. The causes can be varied, they include – bending or twisting awkwardly, lifting or carrying a weight incorrectly or too much, inactivity, bad posture when seated or standing, over stretching, repetitive work, and even coughing or sneezing. Most often back pain is not due to serious illness though there are a few occasions when this may be the reason.
Sometimes back pain can develop over a period of time though often it comes on suddenly. In the majority of cases the pain will subside after a short time as the body will repair itself. It is important to identify the cause of the problem so that the correct course of action can be taken.
If the pain persist for more than three or four days then it is important to consult your local GP. They can prescribe you medication to alleviate the pain and offer advice to aid your recovery. In certain situations you may be referred to a specialist for tests and scans. It is often hard to diagnose the cause of back pain unless it is due to a particular event or injury.
Most doctors will tell you that the old saying of prevention is better than a cure is true, especially in relation to back pain. To avoid straining your muscles your back needs to be both supple and strong. To lessen your chances of back pain it is best to lose any excess weight, wear flat shoes, and avoid lifting heavy objects or making sudden jerky movements.
It is also beneficial to understand about a good posture. When you are standing you need to have a straight back with your weight evenly balanced between both sides of your body. When you sit down your back should still be upright and it is best to have support in the small of your back.
