Back pain is probably one of the most common ailments suffered by millions of people worldwide. This is a pain that can either be a timy nagging pinch of discomfort or pain that causes such agony that one is incapacitated.

The reasons for back pain are many but the most common reasons why people have back pain is because of poor posture whilst sitting, walking or standing, overcompensation of another injury, sports and physical activity or even excessive stress placed onto the back muscles.

Back pain does not necessarily mean that your spine or vertebrae or sore but more often a joint, muscles, tendons or ligaments have become inflamed as a result of over exertion.

This over exertion results in the muscles tightening around the injured area in order to compensate for the damaged region. This leads to all sorts of pain and discomfort that often means that the individual has to seek the professional advise of a physiotherapist, chiropractor or their general practitioner.

These medical professionals are able to best isolate the effected area and treat it accordingly through different methods of treatment. A physiotherapist is more likely to use needles (acupuncture), heat, ice and their hands in order to help the muscles and relieve the tension.

Chiropractors also use their hands but their treatment is more focused on the spine and vertebrae then the muscles. A general practitioner can assist with the diagnosis of the problem but more often than not, they will refer the patient to either the physiotherapist or the chiropractor.

Perhaps the easiest way to alleviate if not avoid back pain altogether is to exercise and stay fit and healthy. While it is necessary to maintain a healthy body it is more important to make sure that one doesn’t over do any exercises in the chase that is the elusive perfect physique.

By taking part in strenuous exercise you are more likely to do yourself more harm than good Ensure that you are properly warmed up before starting your exercise and when you finish make sure that you warm down and stretch your muscles.

Back pain can also be caused by other large joints and muscles that have become weak or injured and are not supporting the back as well they should. It cannot be stresses enough that as soon as any major muscle feels uncomfortable, consult a professional.

Back pain can be diagnosed and managed through exercise treatment and in extreme cases even medication. However the best way to manage back pain is to look after your body properly and avoid it all together.

There is probably no single human being on Earth who has not experienced an episode or two of back pain in their entire existence. This is why most people tend to think of back pain as just another physical discomfort that is just normal and unavoidable.

The thing is that back pain can be just another regular body pains due to overwork and stress. Such pain can easily be relived through the basic hot or cold compress. However, there are kinds of back pains that involve greater and more serious complications.

The normal back pain lasts for just a couple of days and weeks. When it goes on longer than that, one should get to a doctor for a proper and thorough diagnosis. Certain ailments in the internal organs may be the reason behind such lasting back pains. Chronic back pain does not exist on its own. It is usually a symptom of a deeper problem, that need immediate attention.

An intervertebral disc that has been ruptured may be the reason behind a back pain, most specifically one that affects the lower back region. In most cases, the spinal disc naturally degenerates and grows thinner. It then goes out of the central cavity and pushes a nerve root in the process.

Another serious condition behind a lasting back pain is a spinal stenosis. This is characterized by the loss of moisture in the intervertebral discs and the narrowing of the spaces between the said discs. Pressure is exerted on the spinal cords due to this, and as a result, one can experience pain in the back along with pain in the shoulders and legs as well.

These are just two of the many possible conditions that cause back pain. More so, unhealthy habits and lifestyle can be the worst reasons for back pains since these are things that we can control by ourselves. Smoking, obesity and the lack of exercise are few of the most perfect ingredients to develop back pains.

For serious back pains, it is important to see a doctor. Aside from getting the best advice straight from the horse’s mouth, it is only through these experts can we get the most accurate diagnosis, which is an essential aspect of treatment. More so, it is very useful to acquire a healthy lifestyle, not just to avoid back pains but to live a longer and healthier life as well.

Although mostly referred to as an ailment that comes along with age, back pain affects the population across ages, gender and social background. There is, however, a higher number of cases of back pain within the blue collar society considering the manual work they are exposed to. More so, this is not enough evidence to say that back pain that of the masses alone.

Back pain is considered to the second most popular neurological disorder. Most of the time, it affects the lower region of the back, probably stemming from the fact that this is the part which carries a huge part of the body weight. This usually lasts for just less than a month, but serious cases may cause discomfort for a longer period of time.

The ailment spells nothing less than major discomfort. Aside from the stabbing pain, one may reach the point of not being able to move in certain ways. This results to a limit on the activities one can experience when having a back pain.

Sudden causes of back pain may include simply lifting something that might be too heavy for one’s capacity. Overstretching of the muscles in the back may also cause a strain, sprain or spasm and thus, lead to back pain.

Long-staying back pain, on the other hand, may be an indication of more serious medical conditions. Certain problems that affect the various organs of the body can contribute to a back pain. These are kidney diseases, bladder malfunctions and infections and ovarian disorders to name a few. Even a simple infection in the appendix may cause such pain in the lower back.

Poor and unhealthy habits may also lead to back pain. Gaining weight during pregnancy and obesity can also cause back pain. It can also be an effect of having bad posture as well as a consistent improper sleeping position. Back pain is also one of the many negative impacts of smoking.

There are various ways to deal with back pain. For temporary back pain, one can get involved in active exercise activities to strengthen the back muscles and make it more able to deal with too much weight and the likes. More so, the simple back pain due to pressure can be comforted by an oil massage or an herbal tonic. For more serious back pains though, it is necessary to consult a doctor to get a correct diagnosis of one’s condition.

The majority of causes of back pain are not known; occurring as a result of sprains, strains, injuries or trapped nerves. They can also be triggered by regular daily activities and, most notably for office workers in particular, poor posture or slouching over a desk.

Other common causes can be through bending awkwardly, and lifting awkwardly. This is particularly so if people bend at the waist; rather than bend from the knees keeping a straight back.

In some cases, quite severe and long lasting pain happens through twisting suddenly and unexpectedly, coughing violently and, extremely commonly, sneezing when concentrating on another task; and thus being tensed in the upper body.

It is also common for people to wake up with severe pain. Often, this will be as a result of sleeping in a poor position of course, but can be as a result of something a little more sizable.

Women in particular can experience back pain through pregnancy, from even the very early stages. Gynecological issues too can lead to back pain; most often Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, (PID).

Back pain could also be indicative of stress related tension, obesity, and sleep disorders. In such instances, it could be worth trying to increase the level of exercise you take in any day; be it just a simple walk to the store or walking the dog.

Arthritis, bone disorders, bladder and kidney infections, osteoporosis (weak and brittle bones), could also be causes of back pain of course, whilst in rarer case, congenital spine issues, other bone diseases and spreading cancer could also be to blame.

A common complaint, though extremely serious by its nature and the pain it causes id through a ruptured disc. Intervertebral discs cushion the movement of the vertebrae in the back, and when these fail the material within them presses severely onto the spinal cord.

Most often, pain is in the lower back; but can spread as far down as the toes as it irritates the sciatic nerve. A complaint which often effects the elderly and the obese due to the aging process and pressures on the vertebrae, it is often accompanied by a pins and needled sensation.

Whilst most forms of back pain is not particularly serious, it can be indicative of many underlying problems. Most cases should disappear after a few days or weeks however, if you have persistent back pain; it is advisable to consult with a trained physician for correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Back pain is very a common condition and is one of the largest causes of work-related absence. Often an uncomfortable and debilitating problem, it is actually very rarely a serious complaint.

Whilst it is most common in those of middle age; between 35 and 55 years of years of age in Western society, it can affect anyone, of any sex regardless of age.

An extremely complex structure; most causes of back pain are linked to process in which the bones, muscles and ligaments of the back work together.

There are twenty four small bones, known as vertebrae, which support the entire weight of a person’s upper body. These also provide protection for the spinal cord, which carries the all important nervous instructions to the rest of the body.

Allowing the back to be so flexible, and protecting the vertebrae, the intervertebral discs work much like shock absorbers. These are both held in place with strong ligaments, and tendons linking the muscles.

Most commonly lower back pain, (or lumbago), id experienced. Up to 70% of people will, at one time or another, suffer from this. It can be diagnosed from experiencing pain or an aching sensation between the bottom of the ribs and the top of the legs.

The problem often happens over an extended period of time, (due to repetitive actions and movements), and will often be ignored as a result. However, it can be brought on as a result of a fall, sudden twist.

Such is the complex structure of the back; it does not take a great deal of stress or damage to cause the onset of lower back pain. In some cases, it could be nothing more than a nerve becoming trapped, though the pain could be excruciating.

In the majority of cases, back pain will actually heal itself and, contrary to many people’s beliefs, the healing process will actually be increased through maintaining normal activities. Whilst pain can last for anything up to six weeks, it can come and go in as little as a week or less.

However, there are of course some cases where back pain is so severe, and lasts for so long that medical intervention will be required. In such cases, it is always best to have a correct diagnosis of a problem; before looking for solutions of your own. In such cases, the back [pain will likely be as a result of an underlying condition; so treating the actual pain itself may not be enough.

Mostly, back pain occurs because a person has been maintaining an improper posture or because they have allowed too much pressure to be exerted on the muscles in the back region and also because they may have tried to lift more weight than is good for them. Fortunately, it is possible to treat pain in the back in simple ways including by taking bed rest for at least two complete days.

To get relief from pain in the back region you can also try applying icepacks on the affected areas and then alternate applying the ice pack with application of a hot pack. A few such repetitions will help you get welcome relief. Another option open to you is to keep a pillow beneath your chest as well as your legs and then you should try lying on your stomach.

Another option is that you must dip your towel in some boiling hot water and then after twisting the water out from the towel you can apply it to the affected region. By applying steam heat to the region you will succeed in getting a lot of relief from the pain.

Another option is to take some coconut oil or even mustard oil which should be heated and mixed with some camphor powder. This mixture when applied to the affected parts will provide a lot of relief as well. Alternatively, you can heat a mixture of coconut oil with some dried ginger and garlic (crushed) and this mixture too, when applied to the affected parts, will provide much relief from pain in the back region.

Typically, back pain manifests itself in different ways including being nothing worse than a dull ache in the back or it can be very sharp and such pain can impair normal mobility. Such pains also tend to develop very quickly and will become worse after taking a fall or having lifted something that is very heavy.

Anybody can develop pain in their back regions though people, as they age, tend to become more prone to this problem. Similarly, a person that is not physically fit too is more prone to experiencing pain in the back and the same is the case with people that are overweight. Sometimes, an inherited disease too can bring on an onset of pain in the back and a disease such as arthritis also can cause back pain.

A person whose job makes them lift or push or pull and also twist their spine will also be most prone to suffering from pain in the back and even smokers are a high risk group.

The human back is a combination of the spine, spinal cord, veins and muscle that all interconnects to create a support structure on which the whole human body depends on and even a small injury to it can make a person disable – in an extreme case, paraplegic. Back pains usually occur at the lower back area, an area that literally supports the weight of the whole body.

Backbone or spine as it is known in skeletal terms, is one of the most important bone structures of a human body – second only to the brain and the heart. The backbone or vertebral column as it is normally referred to in biological terms supports vital parts of the human body, and even that of animals – be it limbs (legs and hands); skull; hips; ribcage; torso etc. Hence, it is called the workshop of the body as it connects all the main components and helps make their movements possible.

In order to understand how a human back works, it is essential to first understand the anatomy of its central figure – the human spine.

The human spine is a long, curved column made up of 33 small bones called vertebrae. Each vertebra is a ring-shaped bone that is interconnected to other vertebrae to form the spinal canal. It is through this canal that the spinal cord – a mass of nerves flow down from brain to different organs of the body carrying signals of communication, mobility and sensation.

Humans are born with 33 vertebrae, but with age, those 33 reduces to 24 as the bottom nine bones fuse together to form the sacrum and coccyx, which connects the hipbones to the main skeleton.

Of the other 23 vertebrae of the vertebral column, the top part that starts from the skull is called the cervical. The one below is the thoracic region, followed by the lumbar spine, which is taken as the lower back region.

The cervical area, which starts directly from the skull, is made up of seven and the smallest of the main spinal vertebrae, excluding that of the sacrum and coccyx. These are easily recognisable from their other counterparts due to pair of holes in their backside.

Just below the cervical region is the thoracic area that forms the upper back of the human body. It also contains the largest number of vertebrae of all the spinal regions. Each of its bone increases in size as it proceeds downwards.

Then comes the most important spinal region – the lumbar spine. Also called the lower back, it is this part that performs the most functions and bears the greatest amount of burden and stress of the whole body.

And then, of course comes the sacrum, which as mentioned above connects the hip bone (pelvic) to the main skeleton and the tail-piece of the spine, coccyx.
