Back pain is probably one of the most common ailments suffered by millions of people worldwide. This is a pain that can either be a timy nagging pinch of discomfort or pain that causes such agony that one is incapacitated.

The reasons for back pain are many but the most common reasons why people have back pain is because of poor posture whilst sitting, walking or standing, overcompensation of another injury, sports and physical activity or even excessive stress placed onto the back muscles.

Back pain does not necessarily mean that your spine or vertebrae or sore but more often a joint, muscles, tendons or ligaments have become inflamed as a result of over exertion.

This over exertion results in the muscles tightening around the injured area in order to compensate for the damaged region. This leads to all sorts of pain and discomfort that often means that the individual has to seek the professional advise of a physiotherapist, chiropractor or their general practitioner.

These medical professionals are able to best isolate the effected area and treat it accordingly through different methods of treatment. A physiotherapist is more likely to use needles (acupuncture), heat, ice and their hands in order to help the muscles and relieve the tension.

Chiropractors also use their hands but their treatment is more focused on the spine and vertebrae then the muscles. A general practitioner can assist with the diagnosis of the problem but more often than not, they will refer the patient to either the physiotherapist or the chiropractor.

Perhaps the easiest way to alleviate if not avoid back pain altogether is to exercise and stay fit and healthy. While it is necessary to maintain a healthy body it is more important to make sure that one doesn’t over do any exercises in the chase that is the elusive perfect physique.

By taking part in strenuous exercise you are more likely to do yourself more harm than good Ensure that you are properly warmed up before starting your exercise and when you finish make sure that you warm down and stretch your muscles.

Back pain can also be caused by other large joints and muscles that have become weak or injured and are not supporting the back as well they should. It cannot be stresses enough that as soon as any major muscle feels uncomfortable, consult a professional.

Back pain can be diagnosed and managed through exercise treatment and in extreme cases even medication. However the best way to manage back pain is to look after your body properly and avoid it all together.
One of the best way to deal with back pain is to identify the causes of low back pain and see if we can find ways to avoid it.

Bad Posture

Bad posture is an example of the causes of low back pain. Sitting down incorrectly can limit the blood flow to the spine and degenerate the cells that involve it. If you’re sitting over a period of time, sit in chairs with straight backs or low back support. If you can, arrange a sitting position that will keep your knees a little higher than your hips. Adjusting the seat or use a low stool to prop your feet are some examples. Or you could use a chair that has minimum elevation.

Strained Muscles

One cause of low back pain is strained muscles. Pulled muscles, strained muscles, muscles spasm, they all mean the same thing and they feel the same. But how do they occur? Pulled muscles occur when you do strenuous activities such as lifting heavy objects and pulling heavy loads. Generally, your body can cope up such activities, especially if you haul heavy objects regularly. But muscle cells do weaken, and when they do they tend to get torn. Pulled muscles happen when you do an action quickly, like turning your body (especially your trunk) or bending over quickly. The explosive action will tear your muscles, especially if they are not yet warmed up.

So, if you encounter an especially heavy load, do something to divert some of the load so that your muscles can cope up with the work safely.

Muscle Spasms

Muscle spasms happen when you overwork a muscle past the limit. This is particularly true during tough workouts and strenuous games. Every time a muscle works, it converts oxygen and calorie into energy, the burning chemical reaction produces small amounts of toxin that are eventually released as sweat. If the muscle is used continuously, the buildup of toxins will eventually overwhelm the release of toxins in the pores. This toxin buildup produces muscle soreness that contributes to the causes of low back pain.

Although upper back pain is far less common than lower back pain but it can cause serious pain to the person who does suffer from it. The main cause of upper back pain is muscular irritation, or what is termed as myofascial pain, and joint dysfunction. However, upper back pain may also result if there is injury to a disc in the upper back, such as a herniated disc or degenerated disc.

About the Upper Back

Your upper back is sometimes referred to as the thoracic spine, middle back or mid-back. “Thoracic” means that it pertains to the chest. Unlike the cervical spine (neck) and the lumbar spine (lower back), your upper back is not built for much mobility. Instead, it is there mainly for support: to keep us stable as we stand upright and to protect the vital internal organs in the chest.

Because of this unique design of the upper back, it rarely suffers the risk of injury or degeneration. But as what has already been shown, upper back pain does occur and the symptoms can be as bad as lower back pain.

Treatment for Upper Back Pain

Most cases of upper back pain are receptive to manual treatments. If the pain is due to muscular irritation caused by overuse of injuries (such as repetitive motions) or de-conditioning (lack of strength), this type of upper back pain may be treated by:

* Deep massage
* Massage therapy
* Exercise/active and passive physical therapy
* Chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation
* Acupuncture

There is also another method used to treat upper back pain. The method identifies a source of the upper back pain in a specific tender area, called the trigger point. By treating these trigger points, relief for upper back pain is achieved. Treatments that uses this concept include massage therapy, acupuncture and trigger point injections with a local anesthetic (such as Lidocaine).

Manage the Pain Yourself

Not many people want to consult the doctor immediately after feeling any discomfort that may well turn out to be nothing. With upper back pain, you can take self-care steps to provide relief, such as:

* Sports Bra – In women, upper back pain relief is achieved by wearing a sports bra that provides better support.
* Proper Sitting Position – Instead of bringing your eyes, head and neck to the paper you are trying to read, bring the paper to your eyes.
