Back pain is one of the most common condition. In fact, 90% of the adults will experience low back muscle pain at some point in their lives.

A simple back sprain from extended periods of sitting down often leads to a strained muscle. Though not at all that serious, the nagging pain will often interfere with the work, especially on professionals who need plenty of room to concentrate. Muscle spasm that occurs mostly on athletes and persons who do a lot of manual work will find that a simple back strain could cause excruciating back pain making them unable to walk or even stand properly. In contrast, a large herniated disc or completely degenerated spinal structure in the elderly can be completely painless.

The causes of low back muscle pain are very complex since the back muscles are complex themselves. Various lower back muscle pain treatments have surfaced to solve this problem.

Chiropractic Manipulation

Though chiropractic medicine typically is about the structural elements of the body, chiropractors often argued that structural manipulation does not only benefit the bones directly, it also affects other areas, if not all the entire back area. Chiropractic manipulation of the bones can promote skeletal mobility, blood circulation and muscle toning. Its hard to check the tabs of truth about chiropractic medicine since it is still holistic by large, but since most chiropractic patients experience amazing results, its hard to pull the curtain on chiropractic lower back muscle treatment.

Therapy and Massage

Therapy and massage is another way for back pain relief. In fact, medical science always refer massage therapy as a legitimate aid for lower back pain and an effective adjunct to lower back treatments. 54% of doctors refer therapy and massage as a complement to the regimen that they prepare for their patients.
Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami conducted a 2001 research on massage and back pain. They found that “massage lessened lower back pain, depression and anxiety, and improved sleep. The massage therapy group also showed improved range of motion and their serotonin and dopamine levels were higher.” (International Journal of Neuroscience, 106, 131-145).

Acupuncture

Thin, pre-sterilized, disposable needles are used by acupuncture treatments to re-establish the proper flow of blood through the back, alleviating lower back muscle pain. The resulting flow increases circulation for oxygen, blood and lymph nodes work together and hasten the healing process. A research conducted by medical specialists has revealed that indeed, acupuncture cause the release of neuro-chemicals such as endorphins, enkephalins, serotonin and corticosteroids all of which contribute to the reduction of pain and inflammation.

Statistically, four out of five individuals will suffer lower back pain at some point in their lives. The condition affects both men and women, mostly occurring between ages 30 and 50.

Lower back pain has also been found to occur as a result of sedentary lifestyles with too little exercise, or too much exercise which the body is not accustomed to.

But while lower back pain can be a source of anxiety and great discomfort for the affected person, much of the lower back treatment options currently available do not necessarily include surgery.

Analgesics, reducing inflammation, preventing recurrence of episodes, restoring proper function and strength to the back, among others are the focus of most lower back pain treatment methods.

Ice/Heat Packs

The application of ice or heat packs/compresses as a method of lower back pain treatment that has never been scientifically proven. Even so, it remains the most common quick fix for lower back pain. Following trauma, patients apply these compresses to the affected area to help reduce pain and inflammation and allow better mobility.

Suggested Instructions:

* Apply ice or cold compress first to the injured area. Keep the compress on for up to 20 minutes several times a day.
* After 2-3 days, apply heat compress for brief periods. This will help relax the muscles and improve blood flow.

Bed Rest

This form of lower back pain treatment should only be done for a period of one to two days at most. In a study conducted by Finnish scientists in 1996, it was found that persons who continued their activities without bed rest after an episode of lower back pain appeared to have better flexibility than those who stayed in bed for a week. Several studies seem to correlate these findings as they observed that too much bed rest may make back pain worse or cause other complications, such as depression, decreased muscle tone, and blood clots in the legs.

Exercise

This one way to keep active even while recovering from back pain. This lower back pain treatment method will not only speed up recovery for lower back pain but will also help strengthen back and abdominal muscles. For a list of gentle exercises that will help you keep your muscles moving and flexible without exerting too much strain, consult your doctor or therapist.

There will most likely be mild discomfort in the beginning of the exercises. However, as your body gradually becomes accustomed to the activity, the discomfort will disappear.

And are appropriate treatments for each. First, we’ll discuss about each types of back pain. Then, we’ll explore exercises for pain in the lower left back.

* Neuropathic is factored by a nerve tissue damage. It often comes as burning or stabbing pain in the lower left back. An example of which is a pinched nerve.
* Nociceptive is caused by a nervous system injury on the outer area. It often appears as an ongoing dull pain in the lower left back. An example of which is arthritis.
* Chronic is described as deep pain in the lower left back that travels down to the legs. It is at times experienced as pins and needles sensation. It results from a previous wound long since healed.
* Acute is defined as sharp pain in the lower left back that gets severe in the other areas. It can be intermittent but it is usually constant. It is produced by a trauma without even a known cause.

Here are exercises for that pain in the lower left back. Not only is natural healthy because it does not have its side effects, it is also stretches those muscles that have long been not used.

This is called a Seated Leg- Butt Raise that has three stages namely Start Position, Basic Action and Advanced Feat. This specific workout specifically develops the internal abdominal oblique muscle on the sides which your pelvis tends to look unto. It also minimizes left or right sided twinges.

* Start Position
1. Sit comfortably on a chair. See to it that your knees are as the same height as that to your pelvis.
2. Place your hands on the chair at the sides of your buttocks.
3. Spine lengthening and pelvic neutral upward.
4. Fasten your scapulas and gently tuck in your chin.

* Basic Action
1. Stay as calm as possible. Raise your left foot slowly off the ground and feel the weight of your pelvis change over to the left buttock. Take notice if your left knee has changed backward.
2. Anchor and hollow. Lift your left buttock. This is in order for your weight to be transferred to the right buttock.
3. Remain it zipped and hollowed. Place your left knee so that it will be leveled to your right.
4. Do not change your position. Breathe twice then relax. Repeat it for both sides about two to five times.

* Advanced Feat
1. Repeat the basic action but there is a slight difference.
2. Place your hands on your thighs.
3. Use your right leg to push yourself firmly into the back of the chair.

At some point in life almost everyone suffers from back pain. The condition causes pain (severe pain in extreme cases) and interferes with work, daily activities and routine, or recreation. .

The good news is that most lower back pain lasts only for a few days. However, there are instances where the condition could last longer.

Acute Lower Back Pain

Sometimes referred to as short-term lower back pain, acute lower back pain extends any time from a few days to a few weeks. The condition is considered as mechanical in nature as it is often the result of trauma to the lower back.

Short-term back pain may also be caused by disorders that affect the spine, such as arthritis, sports injury, working around the house or in the garden, or a sudden jolt that adds stress to the spinal bones and tissues. One example of the latter is when you receive trauma to your lower back due to a car accident.

The condition has symptoms that range from muscle aches to shooting or stabbing pain. Short-term lower back pain may also limit your flexibility and/or range of motion. Sometimes, it may even lead to inability to stand straight.

If left untreated, some acute lower back pain may lead to more serious conditions.

Chronic Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain is classified by duration. Therefore, if the pain lasts only for a few days to a few weeks, it is short-term or acute lower back pain. However, if the pain persists for more than three months, then the condition is already chronic.

Chronic lower back pain is progressive. This means that the symptoms can only get worse over time. There are a number of possible causes but they are difficult to determine with each case. That is why people who suffer back pain that lasts for far longer than what is considered “normal” are advised to consult the doctor as soon as possible.

Self-Treatment

There are quite a few home remedies used to treat lower back pain. Most of the time the treatment involves using analgesics or taking drugs that reduce inflammation, restore proper function and strength, and prevent recurrence of the injury. Cold and hot compresses are also frequently used to treat lower back pain although the same has not been scientifically proven to treat back pain.

If there is still no improvement after 72 hours of self-care, patients are advised to consult the doctor as soon as possible.

Although upper back pain is far less common than lower back pain but it can cause serious pain to the person who does suffer from it. The main cause of upper back pain is muscular irritation, or what is termed as myofascial pain, and joint dysfunction. However, upper back pain may also result if there is injury to a disc in the upper back, such as a herniated disc or degenerated disc.

About the Upper Back

Your upper back is sometimes referred to as the thoracic spine, middle back or mid-back. “Thoracic” means that it pertains to the chest. Unlike the cervical spine (neck) and the lumbar spine (lower back), your upper back is not built for much mobility. Instead, it is there mainly for support: to keep us stable as we stand upright and to protect the vital internal organs in the chest.

Because of this unique design of the upper back, it rarely suffers the risk of injury or degeneration. But as what has already been shown, upper back pain does occur and the symptoms can be as bad as lower back pain.

Treatment for Upper Back Pain

Most cases of upper back pain are receptive to manual treatments. If the pain is due to muscular irritation caused by overuse of injuries (such as repetitive motions) or de-conditioning (lack of strength), this type of upper back pain may be treated by:

* Deep massage
* Massage therapy
* Exercise/active and passive physical therapy
* Chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation
* Acupuncture

There is also another method used to treat upper back pain. The method identifies a source of the upper back pain in a specific tender area, called the trigger point. By treating these trigger points, relief for upper back pain is achieved. Treatments that uses this concept include massage therapy, acupuncture and trigger point injections with a local anesthetic (such as Lidocaine).

Manage the Pain Yourself

Not many people want to consult the doctor immediately after feeling any discomfort that may well turn out to be nothing. With upper back pain, you can take self-care steps to provide relief, such as:

* Sports Bra – In women, upper back pain relief is achieved by wearing a sports bra that provides better support.
* Proper Sitting Position – Instead of bringing your eyes, head and neck to the paper you are trying to read, bring the paper to your eyes.

The common treatments for back pain include bed rest, pain remedies, cold or hot pads, massage, relax, and so on.

Cold packs work well to treat back pain. But if you have conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or related symptoms you should avoid using cold packs. Leave the cold pack on the area where your pain is for at least twenty minutes.

Later you can apply hot packs to the area. Avoid placing hot packs over areas where scar tissue is present. In addition, if you have poor circulation, avoid placing hot packs in this area as well. Leave the hot packs on your back for at least twenty minutes as well. Do not use heating pads, since experts believe that the pads are unsafe. You can take a hot, steamy bath or shower, or purchase hydrocollators and place it on the area. You can find hydrocollators at pharmacy, or areas where medical equipment, meds, etc, are sold.

Sometimes when we pull the muscles pain relievers can help reduce the pain. Common over-the-counter meds include ibuprofen, aspirin, or meds with acetaminophen included. You should avoid taking ibuprofen and aspirin combined to treat common back pain. In addition, if you have asthma, allergies, or polyps, leave ibuprofen and aspirin alone.

If you muscles are tight, you may benefit from a massage. If the massage increases your pain, just stop it. You may need medical treatment. You should avoid massages if you have fallen and injured your back, or if you were recently in an accident. Seek professional help first.

You can also relax the back if your muscles are tense. Relaxation promotes wellness, since the muscles can rest from over-exertion.

To avoid complicating common back pains you should move around at least 20 minutes each day. Throughout the day we sit, lie on the back, stand, walk, etc, which all applies gravity pressure to the spine. We can learn proper sitting strategies to avoid complicating common back pain.

When sitting you can roll a towel up and situate it at the lower back and on your chair. This will provide the lumbar support. If you have, certain conditions however avoid using such support. Conditions such as spine stenosis or spondylolisthesis can become irritated if you use back supports in such a way.

At what time you sit, try to use a chair that has armrests so that you can use the rests to lower your self in position. Avoid placing the legs directly in front of you, and do not bend when you lift your self from the chair. Avoid twisting when rising from a seated position as well.

To minimize back pain you should avoid sitting for long hours. Walk around in intervals if you have a job that requires you to sit for long hours. At what time you sit, try to position your knees so that they are somewhat above the hips.

Back pain can disrupt your work, routine, and daily activities. Some people suffering from back pain find that they will have to forgo indulging themselves in recreational activities like sports simply because it would put too much stress on their back.

Fortunately, the recent advances in medical science, research, and technology have opened up many back pain treatment options for people who suffer form this condition. How these back pain treatments affect the patient’s back pain varies from individual to individual so that care is advised when choosing the right form of treatment.

Below are some of the most common back pain treatment options you can select from:

Drug Therapies

There is a wide variety of drugs to choose from, including pain relievers, anti-inflammatory medications, and relaxants which can ease muscle tension and spasm. Some of these drugs are available over the counter without need of prescription. However, since some of these drugs may have side effects, it is advised that you consult your doctor before taking any of them.

The drugs used as back pain treatment are classified as follows:

* Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) – including aspirin, ibuprofen, Naproxen, Ketoprofen
* COX-2 Inhibitors – such as celecoxib
* Acetaminophen – Tylenol, Anacin-3, Phenaphen, Valadol, and other analgesic medications
* Opioids – such as morphine and codeine
* Muscle relaxants – cyclobenzaprine, Valium, carisoprodol, etc.

Epidural Injections

This is another form of back pain treatment that is considered as passive since the therapy is applied to the individual. In this method, steroids are injected into the spine. As the drugs travel through the entire spinal column, inflammation in the painful area is decreased, thus providing relief.

Chiropractic Manipulation

This form of back pain treatment requires manual manipulation by a professional therapist or a chiropractor or other qualified health professional. The therapy is thought to help relieve back pain by taking pressure off sensitive neurological tissue, restoring blood flow and increasing blood flow. In addition, chiropractic back pain treatment could trigger a series of chemical reactions in the body, releasing natural pain-killing hormones like endorphin.

Massage

Massages are therapeutic back pain treatments that provide pain relief in the lower back. The manual manipulation of the muscles is said to improve the blood flow, which in turn results in reduction of muscle stiffness and range of motion increase. Sometimes, the massage may also trigger the body to release endorphins, which are the body’s natural pain killers.

These are just some examples of back pain treatment options, there are still other treatment options available to choose from.

Massage Therapy

Massage therapy is a form of back pain remedy that uses manual stimulation of the muscles to reduce or alleviate pain. The massage movements is said to break down scar tissue and release muscles from painful spasms that often character back pains.

This method is becoming increasingly common as a back pain remedy and is even recognized as a form of medical treatment. The American Massage Therapy Association conducted a study where they found that 54% of healthcare providers promote massage therapy as a form of back pain remedy. Specifically, this back pain remedy improves circulation, helps alleviate muscle soreness, relaxes muscles, helps muscles move without pain, and increases endorphins, which are the body’s natural painkillers.

Water Therapy

There are actually several types of water therapy for back pain remedy. But to simplify matters, these are broken down into two broad categories – water exercise therapy and hydrotherapy.

As a general rule, active and well-conditioned persons are less likely to suffer any injuries or stress-related pain. That is why regular exercise is recommended for every individual. But for persons with back pain, moving around may be too painful a task, and yet, exercise they must to keep their muscles from growing weak and develop atrophy as a result of muscular disuse.

Water exercise therapy is an especially useful back pain remedy. The buoyancy of the water is to the advantage of the affected person as there is less pain exercising in the water than exercising on land. Professional assistance from a licensed physical therapist is often required before you can perform any of the complicated exercise maneuvers involved.

On the other hand, hydrotherapy is a back pain remedy that aims to relieve pain by loosening the muscles and ridding the body of toxins that cause pain and inflammation. Numerous studies have revealed that soaking in a hot tub or warm bath as a form of back pain remedy will lessen stiffness, increase flexibility, and decrease the amount of pain medication used. In addition to hot baths, this back pain remedy may also include douches, sauna or steam baths, and wraps with herbal additives.

Back pain medication can actually range from utilizing analgesics that reduces inflammation, restores proper function and prevents injury recurrence. Most patients recuperate even in the absence of residual function loss. However, if there is no noticeable reduction in the twinge after 72 hours of self- care, it is already a must to contact a doctor.

Here is a list of simple back pain medication that you can perform at the comforts of your own home:

* Retire comfortably
In 1996, a Finnish study revealed that persons who continue with their respective works without being able to have bed rest prior to the onset of injury have better muscle flexibility than those who did for one week. Others also suggest that such back pain medication results to secondary complications like psychological depression, decreased muscle tone and blood clots in the legs. In the evenings, patients should lie on a single side with a pillow placed between the knees.

* Varying temperatures
Utilizing hot and cold compresses have never been scientifically proven for back pain medication but it has been tested to allow greater mobility for some individuals. Following a trauma, patients should apply a bag of ice wrapped in towel to the fragile sport for up to 20 minutes each day. After two to three days, a heat pad is then applied for brief periods to relax muscles and escalate blood flow.

* Sweaty calisthenics
Performing an exercise is the most effective manner if you desire speed in your back pain medication. It is important especially for people who have skeletal irregularities to maintain and build strength muscles. If you do not know of any, you can always ask your doctor for reference. For sure the list that they will give includes swimming and walking to say the least. There are also movement therapies to develop proper posture.

* Therapeutic pins
Acapuncture is a kind of back pain medication that involves the insertion of needles. It is the size of human hair strand along the precise points throughout the body. Experts of this believe that it triggers the release of naturally transpiring painkilling elements called peptides. It also keeps the body’s flow of energy back to normal.
